Algebra I introduces students to the fundamental concepts of algebra and lays the groundwork for future high school mathematics courses. This course emphasizes the development of problem-solving skills, mathematical reasoning, and the ability to communicate mathematically. Students will explore algebraic expressions, equations, and functions through a combination of direct instruction, collaborative learning, and real-world applications.
Course Topics Include:
Expressions and Equations
Simplifying algebraic expressions
solving linear equations and inequalities
applying the distributive property
Functions
Understanding the concept of a function
Interpreting function notation
Exploring linear, quadratic, and exponential functions
Linear Equations and Inequalities
Graphing linear equations and inequalities
Solving systems of linear equations using various methods (graphing, substitution, and elimination)
Polynomials
Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and factoring polynomials
Quadratic Equations
Solving quadratics by factoring, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula
Exponents and Exponential Functions
Applying the laws of exponents and exploring growth and decay models
Rational Expressions and Equations
Simplifying, multiplying, and dividing rational expressions and solving rational equations
By the end of the course, students will be prepared for Geometry or Algebra II, equipped with the foundational skills needed to succeed in more advanced mathematics courses.
Course Requirements:
The class will use Bob Jones University Press "Algebra 1, 4th ed." ($71.94). Students need a computer with a camera and microphone for Zoom class capabilities and a calculator with graphing capabilities. (Affiliate link to purchase text from BJUP here)
Course class times and cost:
Algebra 1 class will be virtual; online at 10:30 am - 11:45 am on Mondays and Thursdays. The first class, on Thursday, September 4th, 2025 will be at Covenant Home School Resource Center (CHSRC). The purpose of the first class being in person is for the students to meet their classmates and teacher. Students will also be required to meet in person at CHSRC when there are tests. It is planned that tests will be approximately every 3 weeks or so.
The cost for the course is $95/month. The tuition cost covers all class materials that will be used. CHSRC requires all students that will be at their facility for tests to pay a non-refundable $100 registration fee. (The CHSRC registration fee is $100 per student, regardless of the number of classes taken. This fee supports administrative services and provides student insurance coverage while on campus. Parents will be automatically added to CHSRC’s email list. CHSRC values your privacy and will never sell or share your information.) The class size is limited to a maximum of 15 students.
